The leopard gecko (scientifically classified as Eublepharis macularius) has become popular in the United States and in many parts of the world because of the wide availability of colors and the ease at which even first-time owners can take care of these reptiles.

These pet lizards are fairly smaller than their other gecko relatives. Their size is one of their most endearing traits. One can easily hold an adult leopard gecko in one hand without running the risk of dropping and injuring the reptile. They also have great dispositions and are well-suited to life in captivity.

However, there is one big difference when it comes to leopard geckos: they do not climb walls like other larger geckos. Despite their inability to climb vertical surfaces, you will be pleased to know that they can explore their immediate surroundings as thoroughly as a wild ferret. Rocks, small shrubs – all these are fair game for an inquisitive leopard gecko.

What makes a this lizard a worthy companion? Just look at its general lifespan. They can live up to twenty years in captivity! And that’s without extreme care since they are naturally hardy and resilient little creatures.

All they need is a bit of heat and a clean tank – and that’s all they need to live for a very long time. So if you do decide to keep one and you exert consistent effort in feeding it the right diet and keeping its environment clean and disease-free, you can expect the little critter to hang around for a very long time. That’s the beauty of getting a leopard gecko.

If we trace back to the original locations where the they initially established itself, we would discover that the first populations of these lizards thrived in desert surroundings.

Iraq, Pakistan and India are part of the group of countries where the leopard gecko first emerged. As you can see, these countries are generally hot places, which would explain why these animals was hardy. All it needed was a bit of grass growth over a hot desert setting, and that’s it.

Why are they called leopard geckos? Well they were given the name because of the distinct spots or marks found all over their bodies. The young ones or “juveniles” bear little resemblance to adult ones because of the thick, colored bands that cover their bodies. As a juvenile gecko matures, the intense color bands gradually disappear, and the distinct leopard-like spotting emerges.

In terms of size, they can reach up to ten inches in the wild, but the same length can be achieved in captivity if the right diet and supplementation are given. Diet will be discussed later on in this book. Adult leopard geckos can weight as much as eighty grams.

In the wild, they are known to eat pretty much anything, though their staple or common diet is composed mainly of insects. These animals have very powerful jaws and will eat anything that their jaws can clamp on and crush. These amazing lizards have even been known to challenge dangerous animals like scorpions.

Leopard geckos are not daytime creatures. They prefer the coolness of the night, so when daytime comes, the wild ones are nowhere to be found. They seek refuge in rock piles and logs and even large crevices in the ground where the temperature is much lower than the surface temperature.

Did you know that pigs are the fourth most intelligent animal on the planet? They are fourth on the list after humans, primates, dolphins and whales. Most of us can’t keep a whale or a dolphin as a pet (for obvious reasons) so if intelligence rates high on your choice of pet, you really should consider pot-bellied pigs.

Pigs are very affectionate, social and intelligent beings and contrary to popular belief aren’t smelly by nature, it’s only the way they are kept that has given them this reputation. Pigs are generally clean and make good pets for people who are prone to allergies as they are furless.

Before getting a pig you need to consider if you can provide it with a healthy environment. Needless to say they’re not a good choice if you live in an apartment. If you don’t have the time to spend with your pig, it may develop destructive behavior if bored – pigs love rooting and digging! It’s essential to provide it with time, attention and mental stimulation.

Being highly intelligent, pigs can be trained to do tricks just like dogs. They can even be house trained in the same way as a dog. You just need a little patience and time and before you know it your pig will know not to make a mess indoors. They respond to praise and kindness so always praise your pig profusely if it has done well.

Pigs can be very stubborn and headstrong sometimes and if they aren’t socialized properly they can become territorial and aggressive. While it is rare, they can bite and so aren’t ideal pets for small children.

If you live in a hot area, you must provide your pig with a means of cooling off. Pigs perspire like humans and don’t do well in excessive heat. A kiddy pool in the backyard will provide your pig with the chance to cool off when it’s hot. If it’s cold on the other hand, you have to provide warmth for your pig, the ideal temperature for pigs is 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Commercially prepared pot-bellied pig food is available but because pigs love variety you should supplement your pig’s diet with fruits and vegetables and make sure fresh water is always available.

Because pigs can live up to 15 years you have to be absolutely sure you can make such a long-term commitment before buying one. Pigs are not low maintenance pets and you should do proper research before even considering getting one.

One thing cat lovers know about is the finickiness of their pets. Cats are finicky about what they eat, as well as how they eat it. That behavior follows them to other parts of their lives, including the seemingly simple act of getting a drink of water. Most cat owners can relate stories of their pets refusing to drink standing water. They would rather follow the owner all over the house and greet them in any room that has a faucet, eagerly waiting for a drink of running water. It is this behavior that was part of the original thought process behind the creation of pet fountains.

Owners of cats also know about some health issues that are unique to their pets, and some that while not unique are definitely more prevalent in cats. Things like cat feline acne and infections of the urinary tract and kidneys. Those last two are directly related to the cat drinking plenty of fresh, clean water. All pets need plenty of water, but cats are especially prone to these problems if they do not get enough water. Unlike other pets, cats will sometimes refuse to drink from a bowl if it is stagnant water. Most other animals will eventually cave in and get into a routine of drinking from their bowl. This stubbornness can get cats in trouble with their health.

So, as you can see, the addition of a pet fountain to your home can benefit your pets at the same time it is making your life a bit easier. You will not have to clean and change water every day if you purchase the right fountain. The charcoal filter can last anywhere from two to four weeks, and the water should be enough to last at least a couple of days.

Back to your cat’s health for a moment. There are a couple of health issues to consider when choosing exactly which fountain to purchase. Most pet fountains are made from plastic. But plastic is easily scratched and those scratches can very easily become the place where bacteria starts to thrive. Feline acne is caused by bacteria, so here again you have to be even more careful with this when it comes to cats. Luckily, there are a couple of very good ceramic pet fountains on the market that virtually eliminate this concern. They look good, and cannot be scratched like plastic, so they are less prone to the issue of bacteria. of course this is dependent on the unit being kept clean. Luckily most of these fountains are dishwasher safe. Just one more thing that makes your life a little easier.

If you have a cat, strongly consider a ceramic pet fountain for all the reasons we talked about in this article. For more information, be sure to check out the reviews by the people who already own ceramic pet fountains.

There are some behavioural problems in cats that can be tolerated and some that can’t. These behaviours will be specific to you and your cat. Something that you will tolerate may be different to what someone else will. A good example of this is excessive meowing. Personally I don’t like this, I prefer my cats to talk to me rather than shout all the time. Owners of Siamese cats will probably enjoy this sound as this particular breed is known for being noisy.

As far as your cat is concerned, anything it does is normal. It is not thinking of its effect on you, it is doing a particular behavior because it wants to. It is up to us humans to direct the cat to express its natural instincts in a way that is pleasing for us. For example, if your cat is scratching your furniture or curtains, you may choose to redirect or train your cat to use the scratching post instead. The cat is still undertaking an instinctive behavior, scratching, but is doing it in a way that is acceptable to you.

Redirection to eliminate unwanted behaviours in your cat is much more acceptable (especially to the cat) than punishing it for doing something it considers normal or natural. Punishing your cat will only teach it to be afraid of you and that you cannot be trusted. Cats don’t act out of revenge or spite. But if they are frightened, they will do something such as eliminate in the wrong place because of that fear. However redirection or training will allow the cat to continue that behavior in a way that you approve of.

You need to give your cat interesting alternatives to channel the behavior the way you want. Simply stopping the cat scratching the furniture is not going to solve the problem. You need to give it something else to scratch.

Try to think like your cat. Look to see what temptations are there for it. Do you have a caged bird that your cat finds tempting? Distract it with a toy such as a feather on a spring or a squeaky toy filled with catnip. Is your cat using the pot plants for elimination purposes? Perhaps that is preferable, for the cat, to a smelly litter box. Again the redirection is simple, make the litter box appealing while making the pot plant unappealing by adding some river washed stones or marbles on top of the soil.

Cats are not known for their self control. Some things can just be too tempting for them to resist. If your cat likes to shred the newspaper, put it somewhere out of reach. Give it a box full of scrunched up paper to play in. It will probably keep your cat amused for ages.

Cats will misbehave if they are bored. How would you feel if there was absolutely nothing to do or nothing to play with. We make sure our children are entertained so we need to provide entertainment for our cat. This can be in the form of various types of toys – ones that roll and rattle, ones that run and squeak, some that can be thrown into the air and batted away and some that will swing back to be hit away again. These toys don’t have to be expensive – a feather tied to string or wool and hung from a table, a small round container full of pebbles, a ball of old wool. Your cat is not going to know how much you paid for their toys so go for the cheap option.

Sometimes you might need more obvious methods of discouraging the bad behaviors. Again these should not be done to punish your cat, they should be used to redirect it. If your cat continues to scratch the furniture instead of the scratching post, try rattling a tin of marbles each time it starts the problem behavior. You can also squirt it with some water but aim at the rump and not the face. These methods of discouraging bad behavior will not erode your cat’s trust in you as the rattling tin or squirting water is detached from you. Combined with a firm ‘no’ will get the message across. The cat will soon learn that that sound means stop what I’m doing.

As with children, the earlier bad behaviors are discouraged the easier they are to eliminate. Allowing your cat to jump on the table for some months then suddenly telling it this behavior is no longer acceptable will be harder to change than never letting it on the table to begin with.

Be patient, be firm, be fair. Bad behavior in cats won’t be changed overnight but with repeated and consistent redirection, the behavior will be eliminated. They say it takes a month to eliminate bad habits in humans. I’m sure it will take much less time with your cat.

Birds are fun, unique and entertaining pets, as any bird owner will attest. Not only are they entertaining, but they’re social and express themselves well, and highly very smart. Like dogs and cats, you can train a bird to do all sorts of tricks and respond to various commands. One of the coolest things you can teach your bird to do is to walk off of it’s perch and onto your finger. Read on to learn the best way to learn more about this.

Stepping onto your finger is more than just a cool trick, it’s a very practical behavior that can make your experience as a bet owner much more easier and enjoyable. Why is it important to teach your bird to do this? Well first of all, it’s pretty tricky to move an untrained bird in and out of a cage. Oftentimes you will find that they’ll flutter away from you or hang onto the side of the cage, making it a pain to grab onto. Rather than make things difficult by trying to grab the bird, it’s a lot easier if you get him to walk onto your finger instead.

Besides being practical, this behavior helps your pet to bond to you. As it becomes accustomed to your hand, he will learn to associate positive things with you, and consequently become much easier to handle as he learns that you are there to care for him and will become more trusting.

Teaching this behavior to a bird involves a few steps. First, you want to just spend some time putting your hand in and out of the cage so he becomes used to your hand. Next, start feeding treats to him from your hand, then he’ll start to associate your hand with something he’s interested in. By now, you should also be petting your bird so he’s used to being touched by you. Finally, gently press your finger against his abdomen in order to coax him onto your finger and give a command, such as “step up”. This may take a lot of patience at first, so don’t get frustrated if he doesn’t climb on right away. With enough practice and coaxing, you’ll soon be moving your bird in and out of its cage with ease.

Most of us know that the praying mantis is a voracious predator. It preys on all kinds of insects, many of which are even larger that itself. Sometimes large mantids are able to capture and devour small mice, birds, frogs, spiders, and even scorpions. However, there is one insect that has come to stand out as a natural nemesis of the praying mantis, a supreme Japanese warrior, the Giant Hornet.

Although the praying mantis may be slightly longer than the 2-inch hornet, the giant hornet of Japan boasts a more robust and powerful build. With its imposing presence, 3 inch wingspan, and overly aggressive and fearless nature, the giant hornet is an NFL offensive tackle compared to the leaner and lighter praying mantis, who even with its quick-snatching spiny forelegs, can easily shrink and flee from confrontations with this horrific beast.

As an apex predator, the giant hornet has weaponry that puts it at a fighting advantage over the mantis. Its steel-like jaws crushes and opponents like twigs. With a near ¼ inch stinger that can dart out multiple times, it can paralyze its victims in seconds. The stinger is so potent, in fact, that it can kill a human if stung enough times! The thick, tank-like exoskeleton of the giant hornet can even withstand a foreleg strike from the mantis.

Of course, in addition, the hornet’s unrelenting air attack, with steady hovering skills can create havoc for its prey and if it tries to flee, the hornet has a top speed of around 25 miles per hour! That means even a world class sprinter could not escape the wrath of the giant hornet. Just a few of these raging killing machines can wipe out a whole nest of honey bees in a short span of time without breaking a sweat!

There have been video documentation of such confrontations with mantids, where the more powerful and aggressive giant hornet can wriggle free of the grasp of the praying mantis and impose its will and eventually decapitate and devour the mantis. There are not many insects that are able to free themselves once in the death-hold of the mantis’ powerful forelegs. This makes the giant hornet a supreme natural hunter of the praying mantis.

I am a big fan of the praying mantis and it is sad to see these videos of the mantis being beaten by an overly aggressive hornet. The only species of mantis that may be equipped enough to match a giant hornet is the African Praying Mantis, with its naturally more aggressive nature, tougher exterior, and larger and stronger spiny forelegs.

I hope this article has enlightened you about the plight of these mortal enemies and the unpredictable nature of the insect world. I will be posting more articles in the months to come, so in the meantime, thanks for reading!

A little bundle of joy is wonderful whether it is of the human or canine variety. New puppies are so cute with their closed eyes, tiny bodies, and slow movements. The proud owners should be aware of how long dogs are pregnant in order to prepare for the new arrivals.

Pregnancy in a dog lasts an average of 63 days, but it can vary depending on the size of the litter. Dogs carrying large litters will often be pregnant for less than nine weeks, while dogs with small litters may be pregnant for longer than nine weeks. The reproductive life of a dog varies depending on the breed, with small dogs going into heat at about four to six months old, while large breeds begin at 12 to 24 months. Most dogs go into heat two times per year and will be able to breed with more than one male dog during the three weeks while in heat.

If a dog is pregnant, it will exhibit some specific signs during the first three weeks. These include demanding and affectionate behavior interspersed with wanting to be left alone. The dog may also be lethargic, have a decreased appetite, and have swollen or enlarged nipples. These symptoms are triggered by hormonal changes due to the pregnancy. In later weeks, the dog will develop an increase in appetite and have weight gain.

Smaller breeds will appear larger when pregnant due to the limited room they have to carry puppies. After a month, a veterinarian can perform an ultrasound or blood test to detect whether the dog is pregnant. An x-ray can be taken after 60 days of pregnancy and this will reveal the size of the litter. The owner will be able to feel the puppies moving during the dog’s last week of pregnancy.

Some dogs experience a false pregnancy within six to twelve weeks after their heat cycle. This condition is caused by hormones and symptoms usually last for three to four weeks. It is common for unaltered female dogs to experience this and there is no reason for medical concern.

Knowing how long dogs are pregnant allows the owner to schedule the necessary vet visits and prepare an area in the home for the delivery. The owner and the female dog can bond during the pregnancy and get ready for the new puppies. After the delivery, momma and babies will be able to rest safely and comfortably within their special spot in the house.
